Red-Crowned Cranes
Courtship dance ritual

A dance photo sequence that tells the story of Love itself. First, give each other a bow (respect); then look lovingly at each other (admiration) and lastly dance in rhythm & unison (understanding). Love = Respect + Admiration + Understanding for each other, don’t you agree? ๐Ÿ™‚

The endangered Red-crowned Cranes adults usually pair for life and these bonds are reinforced in a mesmerising synchronised courtship dance. To prepare for this moment, I have already bumped up my shutter speed to 1/1000s. Next, I want a shallow depth of field to blur out the background as much as possible with F5.0. The two cranes moved higher up in the snow plane, and I lowered my point of view slightly so that the snow in the foreground nicely hid the crane’s legs (some of the cranes’ legs are tagged for migration study purposes). The bright white snow acts as a giant reflector to expose the blacks of the cranes beautifully, thus I only need an ISO of 320 to capture the scene that I’ve envisioned in my mind for the past hour.
